Truths about the germs under your fingernails

1. Your nails may be harboring germs that can make you sick. Researchers found that bacteria that cause vomiting and diarrhea are often found under people's fingernails. The culprits? Changing diapers, poor bathroom hygiene and handling raw meat--all can leave behind unwanted guests under your nails.

2. Artificial nails are ickiest. They may look cleaner, because they mask what's building up underneath, say experts. And, what's lurking under there, well, it's not so pretty. Researchers believe that more germs are found under artificial nails than under real ones. (Would your decline a handshake to avoid germs?)

3. Potentially "fatal" germs can lurk under hospital workers' nails. Ugh, just when you think hospitals are safe places--this unsettling research notes that dirty fingernails could be the source of deadly infections passed from doctors and nurses to patients. An important note: Don't be afraid of hospitals, but also, don't be afraid to ask your health care provider to wash her hands when she comes into the room to examine you--especially if you don't see her scrub up right away or do so carelessly (one doctor who treated my son didn't even use soap!). Speaking of hospitals, did you see this post about patient safety? Scary stuff.

4. Sorry guys, your nails are germier. According to experts, men have more germs camping out under their fingernails than women. Yes ladies, it's OK to ask him to wash his hands now and then--especially before getting romantic!

5. Surprise! Nail biters may actually have cleaner nails. But, the good news stops there. According to research, while the act of biting nails may clear out bacteria, nail biters ingest more germs. Yuck!

News on X'mas week

I am sure everyone is expecting, at least, some good news for the coming 2009.

I received an email from my company's management on late Tuesday's evening concerning the 2009 compensation package.

The email stating that the company is deferring the timing of annual salaries increases to March 2009 instead of January 2009. Reason: to allow time for the Company to collect more market information (down sizing, pay cut????) to ensure that the Company is making a fair and competitive decision about increases [or decreases kah??? -.-III ). Talking about bonus? No eyes see.

I am not sure whether to take this piece of news as a good or bad news - "to collect more market information".

One thing for sure, I am going to take some prudence steps (you too??) for the coming year and to save as much as possible for the worst days O.o

Got to defer my plan to replace my car again liao :(

Ways to Save Your Job

These days, everyone is feeling the pinch. Turbulent markets lead to smaller budget, cancelled holiday parties and dinners, and even the closing of long-standing companies, it's natural to feel a little skittish about your job security. Declaring doomsday in your cubicle, though, is the last thing you want to do.

Start working to protect your job instead with the simple strategies that can help you weather the economic storm.

DON'T BE A GRUMBLER

Put simply, your attitude matters. In the midst of fiscal turmoil, there's no room for Divas. Shaky times can sink office morale, and no boss wants a troublemaker around adding to that. Even good performers who are high-maintenance can't escape the prospect of job loss. Arrogance just isn't going to cut it in the workplace anymore.

If you've ever been prone to carping about the incompetent office temp, the lack of company benefits or how your bite-size cube is cramping your style - even in hushed tones - now's the time to adjust your behavior and your outlook.

BE EXTRA USEFUL

Don't let the prospect of layoffs worry you to the point that you stop doing your job. Twiddling your thumbs and waiting for the ax to fall won't do anyone, especially your boss, a snippet of good.

If you're serious about wanting to keep your job, cutting corners on projects and completing items to a good-enough level simply won't do. In hard times, bosses are going to have edicts to let employees go. Put in the extra effort and be the happy, productive employee they'd like to see stick around. Meet your responsibilities - and then some: Look for opportunities to take on a special project or pitch in to help out a colleague or your boss.

REVAMP YOUR FACEBOOK, MYSPACE AND/OR FRIENDSTER PAGE

Employers do look - and regularly. Social media sites provide a fun way of keeping in touch, but remember that people may assume things about you (rightly or wrongly) based on the personal-life details you post online. It's not enough to remove the pictures of the party you went to last weekend or the tattoo convention you stumbled upon in Thailand. Make an effort to understand your corporate culture and how Facebook, Myspace or Friendster relates to that.

Go a step further, by removing snapshots of the luxe accommodations you sprang for in July or the pricey, high-end boots you splurged on. In these times it's easy for employers to say decisions are economy-driven, but unfortunately there may be other surprising reasons job-cut decisions are made - and workers may never hear about them. You don't want to send the message that you're spending money aimlessly because you don't need your paycheck and can afford to lose your job.

By the way, how many of you Facebook with your BOSS? No-no for me.

The Courtyard Garden Restaurant, Damansara Heights

Working in Damansara Heights is very challenging when come to foods. It's even worst if ones staying back to work overtime. There is nothing to eat for dinner. If you are sick with the foods at the food courts located at the various office buildings like HP, UOA and etc, you got to drive out to Sri Hartamas, Segambut or Section 17 for lunch.

To try something new, me and my fellow colleagues went to The Courtyard Garden Restaurant located at Lorong Dungun, Damansara Heights for lunch. It was a bungalow house turned into a restaurant.

They serve fusion foods with added local twist, suitable for business lunches. The restaurant offers a warm and cozy ambient.

For lunch sets, the prices are ranging from RM16++ to RM30++ per person. The set includes an ice lemon tea and a dessert.

We ordered the following menus:

#1 Indian-styled Lamb with Rice

#2 Terriyaki Chicken

#3 Beef Noodle

#4 Nasi Lemak

#5 Fried Fish with Rice

The Courtyard Garden Restaurant
10, Lorong Dungun, Damansara Heights
